Habitually Switched Off Light on Shabbos

I turned off the bathroom light by accident on shabbos. I just turned it off as I was exiting the bathroom out of habit. Is this considered Shogeg?

Answer:

Shogeg is defined by the Gemara in terms of forgetting: A person must forget that it is Shabbos, or forget that the act is forbidden, to be considered a Shogeg. For instance, brushing the light switch is not considered a melachah at all (it is like mitasek).

In the case of the question, the “habitual” switching off the light is a Shogeg, because it involves a lack of appreciation for the fact that today is Shabbos. If a person is aware of the Shabbos, he would not “habitually” switch off the light.

Therefore, this is a case of Shogeg.

Best wishes.
