Berachos – Ikar & Tafel

This guide is based on the Shiurim given by Rabbi A. Wiesenfeld at Yeshivas Tiferes Chaim

Generally, when eating foods from different categories, one is required to make two separate berachos. However, sometimes only one beracha will be required on both of them ((שנינו במתניתין (ברכות מד.) . This will occur when two different foods are mixed in a way that it has now become one food, and one of the foods is the more prominent, or if one is eating two foods and one of them is the “main one”. In either of these situations, only one beracha will be required. One must therefore determine which of the foods is the more prominent.

מקור

The (.גמ’ (ברכות מד says that if one eats very salty food and eats bread with it, he should make a beracha on the salty food and not the bread. The reason for this is, since the bread is only being eaten to take away some of the saltiness of the food, it is טפל to the food and doesn’t require a beracha ((עי’ תוס שם שכתב שאע”פ שפת פוטר כל שאר מאכלים, הכא אשמעינן דפעמים פת טפל. .

Understanding

There is a general question in understanding this halacha. When one makes one beracha on the עיקר, is the טפל totally exempt from a beracha, or does it actually require עיקר?

According to most Poskim, the טפל does indeed require a beracha, but is covered by the beracha recited on the עיקר. Since it is only secondary in regards to the main food, its beracha has changed to the beracha of the .

The Halacha of עיקר וטפל

1. If one has two foods that normally require different berachos, one עיקר (main) and the other טפל (secondary), a beracha is only recited on the עיקר. (See below what is considered an עיקר)

2. When reciting the beracha on the עיקר, one need not have intention for the טפל being eaten with it [except in certain cases – see later page 22].

3. Even if one first eats the עיקר alone, the beracha exempts the טפל ((משנה ברכות מד. “הביאו לפניו מליח בתחלה ופת עמו מברך על המליח ופוטר את הפת”. ועי’ במעדני יו”ט (אות ל’) דמש”כ התנא “בתחלה” היא לאשמעינן דאפי’ אם לא אכל העיקר עם הטפל בבת א’ אלא שאכל הטפל אחר העיקר מ”מ נפטר בברכת העיקר)) Consequently, when one eats the טפל afterwards on its own, it does not require a beracha.

Types of עיקר וטפל

There are two types of עיקר וטפל:

  1. mixture of two foods where both are of equal importance.
  2. One food is being eaten to enhance the other.

TYPE 1- “Mixtures”

a) A mixture of two foods where both are of equal importance: When one eats two foods that require different berachos, one makes an individual beracha on each food. However, if the two foods are mixed, even if both are important on their own and equally desired, only one beracha is required. One must first determine if:

a)    It is defined as a proper mixture,

b)    Which one is the עיקר.

What is a Mixture?

The easiest way of determining if the two foods are a proper mixture (and only one beracha will be required) is to ascertain if they are to be eaten as one food. i.e., they are either cooked together and become one entity or even if they are not cooked together, but are served together and generally eaten together in one spoonful, it is considered a “mixture”, and only one beracha is recited ((פרמ”ג סי’ ריב ס”ק א, מ”ב ס”ק א, ערוך השלחן סי’ ריב ס”ק ב שמלת חיים סי’ קכה.

For Example

  • Spaghetti Bolognaise (meat and pasta),
  • Chicken Salad (chicken pieces and vegetables),
  • Fruit salad (fruit and bananas),
  • Rice with vegetables,
  • Ice-cream with fruit/nuts,
  • Cholent.

These foods are considered a mixture even though each food is recognizable for itself.

Q. What if I can see each component of the mixture clearly?

A. It is still considered a mixture and only one beracha is required ((מ”ב ס”ק א)) There is an opinion that holds that if the two foods that are mixed together are of equal importance ((דאם א’ מהם בא רק להטעים או לגוון את המאכל השני לכו”ע פטור מברכה)) and also both are clearly recognizable, two separate berachos should be made ((חיי אדם כלל נא סעי’ יג)). Although many Poskim side with this opinion ((קיצור שלחן ערוך נד-ה, גר”ז סי’ רב סעי’ יז, שו”ת שבט הלוי ח”ז סי’ כז-ג, אות חיים ושלום שכן נהג המנחת אלעזר, בן איש חי ש”ש פ’ פנחס סעי’ יז, כף החיים סי’ רב ס”ק ס, סידור היעב”ץ אות ק’ ס”ק יט, שו”ת באר שרים ח”ה סי’ ה)) , the Mishna Brurah rules that only one beracha is required ((בה”ל ד”ה אם “שספק ברכות להקל”. If one wishes to abide by the second opinion, one of the following options should be followed:

  • Take one of each type and press them together in a way that they will be considered a mixture according to all opinions ((בה”ל שם “ימעך ויאכלם ביחד”.)) .
  • If this is not possible, take other food items (not from the mixture) that have the same berachos as the foods within the mixture and make the berachos with intention to exempt the foods within the mixture ((ס’ מקור הברכה (להגר”ג קרויס שליט”א) סי’ כג)) .
  • Make a beracha in each type individually.

Q. If chicken and potatoes are served together on the same plate, are they considered a mixture if they eaten together on the same fork? A. Although it is common to serve chicken with potatoes, or meatballs with rice on the same plate, and to eat them together on the same spoon, we do not consider the two foods as a mixture. Two separate berachos will be required, even if one eats both together on one spoon ((ערוך השלחן סי’ ריב ס”ב)) . Similarly, chunks of fruit and vegetables placed together in a bowl or on a plate are not considered a mixture and require two separate berachos even if one eats a piece of food or vegetable together ((ס’ וזאת הברכה עמ’ 94)) . If they are actually mixed together and served that way, as is sometimes the case with a fruit salad, it is halachically considered a mixture.

Determining which food is the עיקר

Once it has been established that the two foods are indeed a mixture and only one beracha required, we must now determine which of the two foods is the עיקר in order to know which beracha to recite. The way to determine which of the foods is the עיקר is: a)    If one of them is a mezonos food i.e., one of the 5 grains (wheat, barley, rye, spelt or oats) b)    Which type is the majority of the mixture (רוב).

Note: When one of the foods is added merely to flavor the other, or to give colour, aroma or texture, it will automatically be טפל and not require a beracha, even if its beracha is mezonos or it is the majority of the mixture – see page 17.

MezonosIf one of the two foods is mezonos, it is always considered the עיקר due to its natural importance even if it is the minority ingredient ((גמ’ ברכות “כל שיש בו מחמשת המינים מברכין עליו”, וכ”ה בשו”ע ריש סי’ רח וסי’ ריב ס”א. However, if it is added to bind or decorate the main food, or even simply to give the other food a crunch but not to add taste – then it is not considered the עיקר and a mezonos is not required. See page 18. For Example,

  • Meat mixed with spaghetti – requires only a mezonos [unless there is a lot of meat, in which case a shehakol would also be recited],
  • A salad with a substantial amount of pasta – even if the majority is vegetables, a mezonos exempts the whole salad.
  • If one places a few croutons into a soup simply to give the soup a crunch, a mezonos is not required.

An exception: Rice, although its beracha mezonos, it does not have the same importance as regular mezonos foods (i.e., the 5 grains), and thus is not automatically considered the עיקר of the mixture (unless it’s the majority – see below) ((שו”ע סי’ רח ס”ז, ערוה”ש סי’ ריב ס”א, ס’ ותן ברכה עמ’ 65.

The Majority of the Mixture When one eats a mixture of two foods which are of equal importance (neither of the foods being mezonos), the beracha is determined by which ingredient is the majority ((מ”ב סי’ ריב ס”ק א)) .  If it only comes to add colour, consistency or taste to the other – see below page 17. For example, the beracha to be recited over a fruit salad consisting of apples (העץ) and bananas (האדמה), will depend on which of the two is the majority. If there are more apples in the salad than bananas, only a העץ is required.   v   This rule applies even if the minority ingredient is more desired than the majority ingredient ((שלא מצינו שחביב קודם בדיני עיקר וטפל. For example, if one is eating a mixture of mashed potatoes and meat where there is more potato than meat, the beracha will be האדמה even if the meat is more important/desired (unless the meat is clearly the most important food in which case two berachos should be said). Q. Does majority mean 51% more or that it’s noticeably the majority ingredient? A. Although some Poskim are of the opinion that it must be a noticeable majority ((ס’ מגילת ספר סי’ לה ז בשם פוסקי זמננו. ואפשר הסברא הוא משום שהרוב מכריעה משום חשיבות שבו, א”כ צריך רוב הניכר שבדעת בני אדם הוא העיקר בתבשיל ושאר המינים מתבטלים ונגררים אחריו)) , most Poskim hold that if one food is just 51% of the total quantity, it is sufficient to be considered the majority ingredient ((כן שמעתי מהגר”ע אויערבאך שליט”א, וזאת הברכה עמ’ 94 שהביא ראייה מהפרמ”ג במ”ז סי’ רח ס”ק ז שאם ספק איזה מהם הרוב הואיל וא”א לצמצם יש לחוש שמא א’ מהם הוא הרוב ולכן יוסיף מהמין שירצה עד שיהיה הרוב ויברך עליו.

Q. What if one has a mixture where one type is clearly the most important, but it is the minority ingredient, e.g., a steak salad where there is a mixture of meat slices and vegetables and the majority is vegetables? A. In such a case, two berachos are required ((כך שמעתי מהגר”ע אויערבאך והגרפ”א פאלק שליט”א)) .

Layers

Q. What if one has two important foods one on top of the other – is this also considered a mixture?

A. If they are cooked together ((ועי’ וזאת הברכה פי”א שכתב שכל שמכניסים אותו לתנור בחום של יס”ב יחד עם המילוי הריהו נחשב כאפוי והוי הציפוי טפל לעוגה)) , it’s considered a mixture and only one beracha over the main food is required. If they are not cooked together, since it’s not a real mixture, we view it as two separate foods, requiring two berachos ((מ”ב סי’ קסח ס”ק מה. [As stated earlier, if one food is added only for flavor, color or to bind etc, it will always be טפל – see below page 17] For example,

  • If one eats an egg on a rice cake, two berachos will have to be recited, since it is not considered a mixture. [If the rice cake is eaten just to hold the egg or give it a crunch it will be the טפל and will not require a beracha.]
  • A meringue topped with fruit (where both are equally wanted) will require two berachos.
  • A sponge cake with a thick layer of cheese or chocolate (where the latter is not simply put in to add flavor to the cake) that was not baked together will require two separate berachos according to many Poskim ((שו”ת שבט הלוי ח”ו סי’ כד, שו”ת יבי”א ח”ז סי’ לג)) .

Unsure Which Beracha

Q. What if one is unsure if the two foods require one beracha or two, i.e., one is not sure if it is a mixture or one is unsure which is the עיקר and which is the טפל; does it help to separate them and recite two berachos?

A. Yes. Since he is unsure as to which beracha to make, he should remove some of one type, make its beracha ((כיון שהפרידם יש להם חשיבות לעצמם ויכול לברך על כל אחד בפנ”ע, הגרי”ש אלישיב שליט”א, ס’ וזאת הברכה עמ’ 94.

v   If one of the foods is a mezonos, the beracha should not be recited on that first, since it may exempt the other type ((ס’ מקור הברכה (להגר”ג קראוס שליט”א) ח”א כג, אבל עדיף לברך קודם על דבר אחר ולא על מין מתוך התערובת)) .

v   Some Poskim hold that one should preferably make the berachos on something else (not within this mixture) to exempt the foods within the mixture ((ס’ מקור הכרכה.

v   Some Poskim hold that if it is real mixture [e.g., fruit salad], it doesn’t help to simply remove some of each type since one is already considered a טפל. Nevertheless, if one takes some of the טפל first because he is not interested in eating the עיקר right now or he wants to eat it on its own, it will require its own beracha ((ערוה”ש סי’ ריב ס”ק ב.

Q. Does it help if one has intention not to exempt the טפל when making the beracha on the עיקר?

A. Only in cases that there is a halachic doubt as to whether one beracha will cover both foods.

TYPE 2 – “Enhancers”

Until now we have been dealing with cases where both foods are considered important and one wants to eat both, but because they are mixed together only one beracha is made The way to determine which beracha to recite is determined either by mezonos or by majority ingredient (רוב). There is, however, a very different type of עיקר וטפל where one really wants only one of the two foods; the other is coming to help or improve the main one. The latter is automatically the טפל and a beracha is only required on the עיקר.   There are a few ways a food can become טפל:

a) It is coming to flavor the other food or to make it better to eat ((גמ’ ברכות לו, השותה שמן המעורב עם אניגרון אם הוא חושש בגרונו מברך עליו בורא פרי העץ דהוי שמן עיקר והאניגרון טפל, ואף שהאניגרון מרובה על השמן השמן הוא העיקר הואיל ועיקר כוונתו על השמן והאניגרון בא להטעים אותו.

b) It is coming to add color, to decorate or to bind the main food together ((גמ’ ברכות לט.

c) It makes the main food edible, e.g., the main food is too strong/bitter ((כמש”כ הגמ’ ברכות מד.

d) It comes to hold the main food, preventing the hands getting dirty ((פשוט הוא, והוי כמו כף בלבד. A food can be טפל even if it is:

  • More in volume than the עיקר,
  • Sometimes eaten by itself,
  • Has an enjoyable taste on its own and is – at times – preferred more than the עיקר.

Nevertheless, if now it is being eaten in one of the methods listed above (a-d), it is a טפל and doesn’t require its own beracha since it is exempted by the beracha made on the עיקר.

Mezonos

Q. What if the food that is added to help the main one is a mezonos – can that also be טפל?

A. Although we said earlier that mezonos is never considered a טפל due to its importance, this is true only if it is being eaten for its own taste. If, however, the mezonos is being eaten onlyto help the main food, it is considered a For example, if the mezonos is added to:

  • Decorate the other food – e.g., biscuit crumbs on a fruit salad or biscuit crumbs sprinkled over ice-cream,
  • Bind/thicken the other food – e.g., flour placed in meatballs to hold them together, or flour used to thicken a soup.
  • Give the other food a crunch – e.g., pieces of biscuit in ice-cream to give it a crunch.

In these situations, even a mezonos is a טפל and does not require a beracha.

Exception: As can be seen from the above, a food that is being eaten only to assist another food is considered טפל and is automatically included in the beracha of the עיקר. However, if the food is desired and important on its own, it will require its own beracha (unless it’s in a form of mixture). For example, if one eats a cracker with a piece of cheese on it and he wants both the cracker and the cheese [not that the cheese is to simply give a better taste to the cracker] two separate berachos are required ((עי’ שו”ע סי’ ריב ס”ב ומ”ב שם ס”ק יג בענין מי שאוכל דובשנים ומרקחת ששניהם עיקריים ובאים לאכילה ומברך על שניהם)) . v   In this situation, it’s best to make the beracha on the cheese first before reciting mezonos on the cracker. We mentioned above various ways a food can become טפל:

a) It is coming to make the other food tastier or better to eat: If one of the two foods is being eaten to add taste to the other, it is considered טפל and is exempted by the beracha of the עיקר. For example:

  • Burekas with mushroom sauce – the sauce makes the bureka tastier, thus the beracha is said on the bureka and not the sauce, even if he also likes the sauce.
  • Jam/peanut butter spread on a cracker/rice cake – since the spread is making the cracker/rice cake tastier, a beracha is required on the cracker/rice cake only.
  • Almonds in a bar of chocolate – since the almonds are to add a crunch or taste to the chocolate, a beracha is required only on the chocolate.
  • Pieces of fruit in yogurt – since the fruit is to add sweetness/taste to the yogurt, only a beracha on the yogurt is required.
  • Icing on a cake improves the taste of the cake – only a mezonos is required.
  • The filling inside a blintz is to add taste to the blintz – only a mezonos is required.

b) It is coming to add color, to decorate or to bind the main food together:If one of the foods is mixed to merely add color, decorate, or help bind the other food together, it is considered טפל and is included in the beracha made on the עיקר ((עי’ מגילת ספר סי’ לה סוף אות ב וז”ל: “מסתפק באוכל פרי חדש והוא טפל למאכל אחר האם יברך עליו שהחיינו, לדוגמא אבוקדו שרגילים לאכול עם פת וכיו”ב דיש לומר שאין זו אכילה חשובה לברך עליה ברכת הנהנין כך אין זו אכילה חשובה לברך עליה שהחיינו והוא הביא בשם ספר פתח”ה שהביא מהמהרש”ם בשם פרמ”ג שמ”מ מברך שהחיינו וע”ש עוד)) . For example:

  • A piece of carrot on top of a slice of gefilta fish is for decoration – if one eats it together with the fish, it requires no beracha of its own, even if one likes carrots [unless eaten on its own – see below].
  • A cherry on top of a fruit salad (with mainly bananas and pineapple) does not require a beracha of its own [unless eaten on its own].
  • Flour/breadcrumbs put into meatballs/soup to bind it together or thicken the texture does not require a mezonos or hamotzi (for breadcrumbs) since it is טפל.
  • A few croutons scattered over a vegetable salad to decorate it will not require a mezonos since they are put in to add colour to the salad [unless a significant amount are put in for its own taste].
  • A small amount of salad next to the fish does not normally require a beracha since it is normally טפל as it is put there to add colour or taste to the fish. If, however, it is eaten separately because one enjoys it by itself, it requires its own beracha.

c) It makes the main food edible, e.g., the main food is too strong/bitter:When one wants to eat a food that has a strong, bitter or salty taste, and one eats something to dilute it, no beracha is required on the latter, since it is only eaten to make the main food edible. For example:

  • If one dips bread into whisky because the whisky is too strong for him, no beracha is required on the bread (unless he also wants to eat the bread).
  • If one puts herring on a cracker because the herring is too sharp/salty for him, no beracha is required on the cracker (unless he also wants to eat the cracker).

d) It comes to hold the main food, preventing one’s hands from getting dirty:When one food is being eaten to prevent the other food from making ones hands dirty, it is automatically considered טפל and requires no beracha.

  • If one is eating a cracker to hold herring (e.g., there are no spoons around), but he really wants only the herring, no beracha is recited on the cracker.
  • If a thin layer of cake is used to hold up a cheese cake or an ice-cream cake, no beracha is recited on the cake as it’s only being used to hold up the עיקר.

Note: one must be aware that if one wants to eat the טפל for its own sake, even though his main intention is to use it to hold up the עיקר, it will require its own beracha.

Condition:

Whenever faced with a עיקר וטפל situation, one should be aware that the טפל does not require a beracha because it is covered by the beracha made on the עיקר. ((מ”ב סי’ קסח ס”ק מו)) Consequently, the טפל should not be eaten by itself before the עיקר. If it is, it may require its own beracha – see below page 39. Accordingly, it is best that:

  • When making the beracha, one takes the עיקר first or eats a bit of both ((רמ”א ריב ס”א.
  • If when making the beracha on the עיקר, the טפל is not in front of him, he should have in mind that the beracha he is making is to exempt the טפל also ((מ”ב ס”ק ד שהטפל צריך ברכה ורק פטור ונכלל בברכת העיקר.

Two Important Foods

If two foods are served together (not in the form of a mixture) and both are important on their own, even if one is enhancing the other, two separate berachos are required if they are being eaten separately.

  • Melon served with a cherry on top; if one likes cherry and eats it separately, it requires its own beracha even though it was placed there to decorate the melon ((ס’ וזאת הברכה עמ’ 95.
  • Ice-cream in a sweet cone where one wants to eat both the ice-cream and the cone, two berachos are required even though the cone is also being used to hold the ice-cream.

Leftover טפל

Q. If one has some leftover of the טפל after finishing the עיקר, does it require its own beracha?

A.  No. Since this food has already been exempted by the beracha on the עיקר, it does not require a beracha of its own. Nevertheless, if a substantial amount is leftover or one originally added more in order to eat what will be leftover by itself, it will require its own beracha ((מ”ב סי’ קסח ס”ק מו שאם אכל מרקחת ורקיקין ביחד במקום שהעיקר הוא המרקחת ואינו מברך על הרקיקין, ובסוף נשאר קצת רקיק בלא מרקחת אין צריך לברך עליו כיון דעיקר אכילתו היה ביחד ונחשב לטפל להמרקחת אין חוששין על גמר האכילה. For example, if one added extra milk to a cereal to enjoy the milk by itself after finishing the cereal, a beracha must be made on the milk before drinking it even though the rest of the milk was exempted by the beracha made on the cereal.

Cases

Many of the following examples are written in accordance with the opinion of the Mishna Brurah that a mixture of two foods requires only one beracha (that of the majority or mezonos) even if the two foods are clearly recognizable the mixture. However, as mentioned earlier [page 11], there is an opinion that if both types are clearly recognizable, two berachos should be made. One wishing to abide by this opinion should follow one of the methods given on page 12.

Meat & Rice/Pasta

Pasta: If the meat and pasta are mixed together, only a mezonos is required (even if it is the minority). If there is a substantial amount of meat, two separate berachos are required. Rice: One will only make a mezonos if there is more rice than meat (since rice doesn’t have the importance of normal mezonos). If there is an equal amount of both, one may have to make two berachos since each is important on its own.

Fruit Salad

Fruit salad that is made up of foods of different berachos, requires only one beracha depending on which ingredient is the majority. For example, if there are more apples than bananas, only a העץ is required. If there is an equal amount of each of the different foods e.g., apples, grapes and bananas, most Poskim hold that if in all there are more העץ fruits than האדמה ones, only a העץ is required, and if vice versa, then only a האדמה is required ((שו”ת ויאמר אברהם בשם הגרי”ש אלישיב שליט”א, אור לציון פרק יד אות כט, ס’ שערי ברכה עמ’ שכד. If one is unsure which is the majority, see page 24. v   As stated above, according to some Poskim, a mixture of two distinct foods always requires two separate berachos. See page 12 for different ways of fulfilling this opinion.

Steak/Chicken Salad

If one is served a mixtureof meat and salad, it very much depends on the quantity of each food:

  • If it consists of big slices of meat and the salad is put there to just add color or only flavor/moisture to the meat – a beracha is required on the meat.
  • If it is mostly salad and there are some chunks/pieces of meat in it, since most of the mixture contains vegetables, a beracha is only required on the vegetables. Some Poskim say that since each type is important, two berachos should be made ((כך שמעתי מהגר”ע אויערבאך שליט”א והגרפ”א פאלק שליט”א.

Tuna Salad A vegetable salad with chunks of tuna, that has more vegetables than tuna, only a beracha on the vegetables is required. However, some Poskim say that since the tuna is the more significant food, two berachos should be made [even according to this opinion, if there is only a small sprinkle of tuna to add decoration or to give flavor to the salad, it is a טפל and does not require a beracha of its own].

Salad with Croutons/Pasta

Whether the croutons/pasta requires a mezonos depends on why it’s being eaten:

  • A salad with a substantial amount of pasta in it (i.e., one also wants to eat pasta for the taste or to satisfy), requires a beracha on the pasta and this will exempt also the salad (even if there is more salad than pasta).
  • A salad with a small sprinkle of croutons for color, presentation or crunch does not require a mezonos, since the croutons are not being eaten for its taste, but for other reasons ((כך שמעתי מהגרפ”א פאלק שליט”א)) .

Schnitzel

(with a bread/matzo coating)Most Poskim hold that the beracha on schnitzel is שהכל for a number of reasons:

  • The bread coating is just to give taste to the chicken ((אג”מ, הגר”י קמנצקי ויבלח”ט הגרח”פ ששינברג שליט”א הובא בס’ ותן ברכה עמ’ 78, שו”ת באר משה ח”ה סי’ סא)) ,
  • It is put there to make the frying easier ((ונחשב כמו לדבק בעלמא, שו”ת חשב האפוד ח”ג סי’ עב.
  • It is put there to give the schnitzel a crunch, (change the texture) ((שמעתי מהגרפ”א פאלק שליט”א)) ,
  • Since it is simply like a shell to the main food ((שו”ת שבט הלוי ח”ד סי’ קסא עפ”י המ”ב סי’ רד ס”ק נא ע”ש.

[Note: even if flavored bread crumbs are used to coat the schnitzel, it is not the bread itself giving the flavor; it’s the flavorings they put in ((כך אמר לי הגרפ”א פאלק שליט”א)) ] The same applies to the vegetarian schnitzels, since the inside is normally the main food and the coating is there simply to enhance it, the beracha is made only on the filling and not the coating [unless there is a very thick layer of mezonos]. However, there is an opinion that since the two things are cooked together, even if they are not actually mixed, mezonos always prevails ((הגרי”ש אלישיב שליט”א (הובא בס’ ותן ברכה עמ’ 78). Thick layer: Nevertheless, if the coating around the schnitzel is thick, many Poskim are of the opinion that the beracha will be only mezonos, since the mezonos is to also give its own taste ((אג”מ והגרח”פ שיינברג שליט”א הובא בס’ ותן ברכה שם)) .

Bureka/Knish

(pastry filled with potato etc) Since the filling makes the pastry/dough tastier, only a mezonos is required. However, if there is a thick layer of potatoes, two berachos will be required ((שו”ת שלחן הלוי (להגר”י בעלסקי שליט”א) פ”ג אות ו.

Apple Kugal

Apple kugal that contains flour:

  • If the flour is put in for taste, a mezonos is recited [this is common if it is made more like a cake],
  • If the flour is put in only to thicken or to bind it, the flour is טפל and the beracha on the kugal is either שהכל or העץ (depending on how fine it is grated).

Burger In a Mezonos Roll

Since both layers (roll and meat) are both important and are not actually mixed, two berachos will be required. [One must verify with a rabbinic authority that the roll is mezonos and not hamotzi.]

Crackers and Spreads

When eating crackers with various spreads (chocolate spread, peanut butter, cream-cheese) a beracha is said only on the cracker. A slice of avocado or cheese will normally require two berachos since one wants both foods.

Herring On Crackers

The halachos of the beracha in this case very much depends on the person’s intention when eating it:

  • If one is eating the cracker only because the herring is too sharp, or too fishy or to stop his hand from handling the herring, then the herring is the עיקר, and only a beracha on the herring is required.
  • If the herring is being eaten to enhance the cracker, or to give it a flavor, only a beracha on the cracker is required.
  • If one wants to eat both the cracker and the herring (i.e., he would eat the herring by itself, but he also wants the cracker) – two berachos are required. This is because it is not a mixture, and if he wants both foods, there is no עיקר or טפל.

Ice-Cream & Cone

Q. How many berachos does one make when eating ice-cream in a cone,?

A. This case will very much depend on one’s intention when eating it:

  • Children will usually need to say two berachos because they usually enjoy and want both the ice-cream and the cone.
  • Adults will say a beracha on the cone (in addition to the ice-cream) only if it is a sweet, nice tasting cone. A plain cone that is simply being used to hold the ice-cream or to make it easier to eat, but he is not in the slightest bit interested to eat it does not require a beracha even if it eaten separately at the end (provided only a small amount is left after finishing the עיקר.

v    When reciting two berachos (on the cone and the ice-cream), one need not eat the cone first (because it is mezonos), rather, one may start with the ice-cream and upon reaching the cone, recite a mezonos ((סברה כעין זן מצאתי בס’ כוס של אליהו (שיעורי הגרפ”א פאלק שליט”א) שאין צריך להפוך סדר האכילה כדי לברך מזונות תחלה שהגביע נקרא שזה אינו לפניו כיון שאין דעתו לאוכלו עד לאחר שאכל את הגלידה)) . Ice-Cream with Cookies In most cases the cookies are not being eaten to improve the ice-cream, rather in order to enjoy their taste in the ice-cream – thus, it is a mixture with mezonos – and only a mezonos is required [provided there is a significant amount] ((וכ”ה לשון המ”ב סי’ ריב ס”ק א וז”ל שם “חמשת מיני דגן קיימא לן דאם מערבין עם שאר מינים אפילו הם המעוט כל שנתן בהתבשיל לטעם אזלינן בתריהו”. If the chunks of biscuits are added only to give the ice-cream a crunch or for its colour (but not for their taste), or if only a small amount was added, a mezonos is not recited. There is an opinion that since the main food is the ice-cream, even if the mezonos is added for flavor, only a שהכל is required ((ראיתי בס’ חדש שיוצא לאור שו”ת שלחן הלוי (להגר”י בעלסקי שליט”א) פ”ג אות ה שכתב ש”לכתחילה יברך מזונות על דבר אחר, ואם אין לו על מה לברך, לא יברך על העוגיות שבגלידה”, וז”ל שם “ששם (במ”ב) מיירי בתערובות של מין מזונות שבא לטעם, אבל במקום שיש עיקר ברור הקובע את המאכל על שמו, המזונות טפלים לו ואינם באים אלא לשמשו ולהטעימו הולכים אחר עיקר וטפל ולא אחר דין כל שיש בו” עכ”ל שם)) .

Ice-Cream Sandwich

  • If one wants both the biscuit and the ice-cream, two berachos are required ((כ”כ באג”מ או”ח ח”ד סי’ מג, ס’ שערי הברכה עמ’ השלג. 97)) . The mezonos should be made first [because one wants to eat both now] ((משום דין קדימה, עי’ שו”ע סע’ ריא)) .
  • If one’s main intention is for the ice-cream and the wafer is just in order to help him eat it or to stop his hand from getting dirty, only a שהכל is required since the wafer is טפל.

Crembo

(Chocolate cream with a biscuit base)

Although one of the purposes of the biscuit is to hold up the cream, nevertheless, since it is also put in for its own taste, it requires its own beracha and the beracha on the cream does not exempt it ((ס’ שערי הברכה עמ’ שלב)) . If it is a thin biscuit that is simply being used to hold up the cream, a mezonos is not required ((עי’ ס’ וזאת הברכה בבירור הלכה סי’ לב שהביא שיטות לכאן ולכאן, ומסיים שם “טוב להפריד מעט מהבסקויט ולברך עליו מזונות בנפרד ואח”כ לברך שהכל על הקרם.

Even in the latter case, if one first eats the cream and then the biscuit, two separate berachos are required.

Trifle

(three layered cake – cake, fruit and Jelly)

Since each of the three layers has its own individual importance (i.e., not just to help the other), three separate berachos should be made ((ס’ כוס של אליהו עמ’ נא.

Cereal & Milk

  • Milk added to a cereal does not require a shehakol, since it is exempted by the beracha on the cereal. This is true even if he is thirsty and actually wants the milk (even after finishing the cereal). The reason is that the main purpose of the milk is to make the cereal soft and easier to eat, so it is a טפל.
  • If one adds in extra milk (either because he wants to drink it after or if he accidently poured in too much), since he will be drinking that milk and enjoying it, two separate berachos will be required ((שו”ת אג”מ או”ח ח”ד סי’ מג)) .

If one is unsure whether it’s a normal amount of milk or not, there are a few options one could follow,

a)    First say the beracha on the milk.

b)    Say a beracha on a drink and have in mind to exempt the milk,

c)    Add milk until he is sure that it requires its own beracha. As stated above, usually the milk is added to merely enhance the cereal, therefore no beracha is required on it.

Yogurt with Mezonos/Fruit Pieces

Q. If one mixes small pieces of granola, crushed biscuit or fruit chunks into a yogurt, how many berachos does one make? Mezonos

  • If the mezonos is added to make it either more filling, or to improve the yogurt or because he likes the taste, then a mezonos is recited on the complete mixture [unless the amount of mezonos is very insignificant] ((עי’ הע’ 60 לעיל  מהגר”י בעלסקי שליט”א שרק מברך ע”ז שהכל כיון שסוף סוף הוא העיקר)) .
  • If they are put in only to add colour, or because it makes the plain yogurt crunchy (but not because he actually likes it), only a שהכל is required, since the mezonos is טפל.

If one is in doubt regarding one of the above mentioned points, he may take some yogurt, and say a beracha on it. He then should take some of the mezonos and make a separate beracha on that. Fruit Pieces Since the majority of the mixture is yogurt, it requires only a שהכל since the fruit pieces are טפל.

Cholent

If a cholent contains a mixture of beans, barley ((עי’ שו”ע סי’ רח ס”ב. ואם הגריסים מועטים מאד ואין להם חשיבות כלל ביחס לשאר המינים המעורבים בחמין, אין התבשיל בטל אליהם וצריך לברך על כל א’ את ברכתו הראויה)) , potatoes, meat and kishka – how many berachos does one make? As stated earlier, before determining which beracha to make, one must first determine if it is indeed considered a mixture (if it not considered a mixture, individual berachos will always be required). In the typical case, a cholent is an entire mixture, and if one would take a spoonful of cholent, he would most likely get a bit of everything on it, and if there is a substantial amount of barley in the mixture, a mezonos will exempt the entire cholent ((ככל תערובות שיש בו מיני מזונות (שנתן לטעם), עי’ ערוה”ש סעי’ א. [Some Poskim hold that even in this case, separate berachos are required ((כיון שהקטניות והתפו”א והבשר הם הרוב והעיקר בכמות וטעם בתבשיל, והרבה כפות אין מהגריסים כמעט כלום זולת אם הגריסים בכמות ניכרים היטב בתערובת ומרגישים טעמם שאז מברך רק מזונות על כל הטשולנט. If there is only a very small amount of barley in the cholent, or the barley is put in to thicken the texture of the cholent a mezonos is not recited.

  • According to some Poskim, if the consistency of the cholent is made up of big chunks of potatoes and meat and a mixture of beans and barley, it is not considered a mixture, and thus, one beracha will not be sufficient ((דומה למש”כ במ”ב סי’ רח ס”ק כג לגבי מרק, שאם המרק רב על מיני דגן אינו בטל עליו כיון שהוא עשוי לשתיה, וה”ה בנידון דידן כיון שעיקר שם המאכל נקרא ע”ש הבשר והתפו”א אינם בטלים לגריסים, ואפשר לחלק’ וצ”ע. Similarly, if one eats each of the foods separately, e.g., he enjoys eating the potatoes or the meat separately; individual berachos will be required on each food.

According to this opinion, since the beans and barley are normally a mixture, a mezonos is said on both. The berachos should be made first on the potatoes and meat before the barley.

  • The kishka in the cholent will always require its own mezonos (in a case mezonos wasn’t said on the barley), as it is not considered as mixed with the meat and potatoes [unless cut into pieces].

ברכה אחרונה– cholent – In most cases one will only say a בורא נפשות. If he ate a כזית of the barley (or other mezonos) within approximately 4 minutes, then an על המחיה will also be recited.

Cheesecake

  • A cheesecake with a thick layer of biscuit on the bottom requires only a mezonos ((אג”מ הובא בס’ ותן ברכה עמ’ 79)) . [One should make sure not to eat any of the cheese before the cake] Some Poskim hold that two berachos should be recited (unless the biscuit is to only support the cheese or to make it look like a two layered cake) ((לפי הכרעת המ”ב שאינו נחשב כתערובת צריך ברכה על כל מין בנפרד, כ”כ שו”ת שבט הלוי ח”ו סי’ כד, כז-ו, הגרי”ש אלישיב שליט”א הובא בוזאת הברכה עמ’ 97)) .
  • A cheesecake with a thin layer of mezonos – the layer is insignificant and is usually not there for its own taste but rather to support the cake, or to enhance the appearance of the cake. Thus, it is considered טפל and one makes only a שהכל.

Flan (sponge cake with Jelly on top) This requires only a mezonos since the jelly is to improve the taste of the cake. If, however, there is a thick layer of jelly, two berachos are required.

Apple Strudel

(sweet filling of apple or other fruit covered by think/thick pastry)

  • Most people eat it as a cake – so only a mezonos is required [as the filling is eaten to make the mezonos tastier].
  • If the pastry is very thin and is simply to support the filling (making it easy to serve/eat), or for the decoration – only a שהכל is recited.

Icing on a Cake Since the icing is to improve the cake, only a mezonos is required ((מ”ב סי’ קסח ס”ק מה, שו”ת שבט הלוי ח”ז סי’ כז)) .

Chocolate/Sugar Covered Foods

Non Mezonos (Nuts & Raisins)

  • Many Poskim say that whichever of the types is the majority is considered the E.g., if the raisin is covered with a lot of chocolate, only a שהכל is required ((כן פסק הגרי”ש אלישיב שליט”א, הגרש”ז זצ”ל, ס’ מקור הברכה (להגר”ג קראוס שליט”א (, מגילת ספר סי’ לו.
  • However, some Poskim contend that in this situation, one’s intention is automatically on both foods ((אג”מ או”ח ח”ג סי’ לא. Thus, two berachos should be made.

If one’s main intention is for the nut or raisin, the chocolate coating is טפל since it is simply to make the inside food tastier. Thus, only a beracha on the inside food is required (and should be made before or at the same time as eating the chocolate coating). A sugar coated almond (where there is a thick layer of sugar around the nut) – since the coating is important on its own, it may be the עיקר so only a שהכל is required ((עי’ בן איש חי פ’ פנחס סעי’ טו, שו”ת אור לציון פרק יד ס”ד)) . If one wants both equally, two berachos should be recited. Some hold that even in this case a beracha is required only on the nut inside ((כמש”כ המ”ב סי’ רד ס”ק נא שאף שהדבש הוא הרוב אעפ”כ מברך רק העץ ופוטר את הסוכר, וכ”כ בס’ וזאת הברכה עמ’ 96)) . Others contend that the deciding factor is the majority ingredient ((הגרי”ש אלישיב שליט”א הובא בוזאת הברכה עמ’ 96, והגרש”ז זצ”ל הובא בס’ ותן ברכה ח”ב פרק כב)) .

  • If one sucks the coating first and then eats the inside, one should make a beracha on the coating, and then a beracha on the inside food when he gets to it ((ס’ כוס של אליהו עמ’ נב.

Mezonos (Chocolate Covered Wafers)

If one’s intention is to eat the wafer and the chocolate covering it is just to add flavor, only a mezonos is required. If the wafer is very thin (and that is not one’s main intention when eating it), and the layer of chocolate is thick, only a שהכל is required. An American nut (peanuts covered with a baked dough) – since it is a thick mezonos layer and it has a enjoyable taste for itself, only a mezonos is required ((כיון שהציפוי עבה וחשוב בפנ”ע, הרי זה נחשב לתערובת של שני מינים, וכיון שהקמח הוא ממיני דגן הריהו העיקר וברכתו במ”מ. Some Poskim hold that the inside is the .

  • When making a beracha on the inside food, one is not required to peel off the outer layer to make a beracha on the main food. Rather, one should take a bite of both the inside and outside together after making the beracha so the outside is exempted by the beracha made on the inside.

Bar of Chocolate with Pieces of Nuts

Since the main food is the chocolate and the nuts just add taste, only a beracha on the chocolate it required.

Peanut/Nutty Chews (Chocolate and caramel bar filled with peanuts)

This requires only a שהכל acc. to some, since the עיקר is the chocolate/caramel ((ס’ שערי הברכה)) .

Sushi (fish & vegetables wrapped in rice) Since the main majority is rice, only a mezonos is required. However, if there is a substantial amount of fish inside (or vegetables), separate berachos will be required ((כנלענ”ד)) .

Soup with Croutons/Kneidlach/Vegetables

This question is slightly more complicated than some of the above, because on one hand one is eating soup, so one cannot say that the soup is a טפל, but on the other hand if there is a substantial amount of mezonos in the soup, it’s difficult to call that a טפל also. Therefore in many situations, two separate berachos are required ((עי’ מג”א סי’ רח ס”ק ז.

Croutons/Lockshen/Kneidlach

[Most types of croutons are mezonos even if they are made from bread if they are deep fried and smaller than a כזית. If they are oven baked (even if sprayed with oil) they are hamotzi]

  • A soup with a kneidel or a substantial amount of croutons or lockshen requires both a שהכל and מזונות.

v   The beracha should be made first on the soup (שהכל) and then the מזונות as if one makes the מזונות first, he may have פטר the soup with that beracha enabling him to now make a beracha on the soup ((מ”ב סי’ רח ס”ק כג.

  • If the soup contains a very small amount of croutons/lockshen added only for appearance or to add thickness/crunchiness to the soup, they are considered טפל and a beracha is required only on the soup.
  • If one has mostly lockshen/croutons and very little soup (often the case by children) only a mezonos is required on the mixture.

Vegetables

A clear soup with big pieces of vegetables in it differs slightly than the previous question because the food inside the soup isn’t a mezonos so it’s easier to be considered a טפל.

  • A few small pieces of vegetables in the soup are considered טפל and do not require a beracha.
  • Big pieces of vegetable e.g., piece of carrot in a chicken soup cannot be considered a טפל and will require its own beracha (apart from the soup) especially if one likes to eat it ((ולענ”ד צריך לברך תחילה על ירקות משום אם יברך על המרק תחילה אפשר שהברכה פוטר ג”כ את הירקות בתוך המרק.
  • A vegetable soup with many small pieces of vegetables in it requires only a האדמה, since the main part is the vegetables. If there is a substantial amount of soup, a שהכל is also required.

Biscuit Dipped into TeaAlthough some Poskim hold it is not considered a mixture ((מג”א סי’ קסח ס”ק ל.)) , most Poskim hold that liquid absorbed into a solid is considered a mixture. Because of this ספק, the Mishna Brurah rules that one should make two separate berachos before dipping it in ((שם ס”ק סה, שעה”צ ס”ק סא. 73)) . If one is only dipping it into the tea to soften the biscuit or sweeten it, a beracha is only required on the biscuit. v   When making two berachos, it’s preferable to make the beracha on the biscuit first and a שהכל on another food/drink ((כיון שיש ספק אם מברך קודם מזונות אז יש ספק אם עדיין חייב לברך שהכל על התא דאולי הוא טפל, א”כ יש לברך שהכל על דבר אחר ולפטור את התא)) . Alternatively, one may either make the beracha on the coffee/tea before the beracha on the biscuit. Kugel and Pickle One eating at a Kiddush a piece of yerushalmi kugal served together with a pickle, need not make a beracha on the pickle as it is served to enhance the kugal ((שש”כ פרק נד סעי’ כב)) . This is true even if one eats some of the pickle by itself [provided it is not eaten before the kugal]. However, if one likes the pickle itself and takes it and eats it on its own, not to enhance the kugal, it requires its own beracha.

Peppers Stuffed with Meat

  • A pepper (or any other vegetable) that is stuffed with meat is normally eaten for the meat inside. Thus, only a beracha on the meat is required) even if it is eaten separately) ((שכל דבר ממולא כגון פלפל ממולא, הוא תמיד נחשב כטפל או כדי לתת טעם במילוי או בכדי שיחזיק וישמש כמעשה כלי.
  • If however, one does want the vegetable also (and not simply to enhance the flavor of the meat), should make a beracha on it also ((אשל אברהם (בוטשאטש) סי’ רח ד”ה עור, שו”ת אמרי מרדכי (גרוס) הובא בס’ שערי ברכה שם)) .

Stuffed Chicken

Normally, the filling is only to enhance the taste of the chicken so it doesn’t require a beracha. In certain situations (a lot of filling, one eats it by itself) will require a beracha to be made on the stuffing also. _____________________________

As mentioned previously, many of the above examples were of mixtures that require only one beracha. This is according to the opinion of the Mishna Brurah that even if the two foods in the mixture are clearly recognizable, the mixture only requires one beracha. As mentioned earlier, there is an opinion that holds that if the pieces within the mixture are clearly recognizable, two separate berachos should be made. One wishing to abide by this view should either make two separate berachos or, as suggested by the Mishna Berurah, press the two pieces together so they are considered one food and now all opinions will require only one beracha.         When the טפל Requires Its Own BerachaAs explained above, when a food is a טפל it actually does require a beracha, but is covered by the beracha made on the עיקר. Even if after finishing eating the עיקר one wants to continue eating the טפל by itself (e.g., after finishing the cereal, he wants to drink the leftover milk), a beracha is not required on the טפל (milk), since it was exempted by the beracha made on the עיקר. However, in some situations, the beracha on the עיקר cannot exempt the טפל and a separate beracha must be made on the טפל.

1. If the טפל is eaten first,

2. One made a beracha on the עיקר without knowing the טפל was coming,

3. If one added some טפל,

4. When no beracha is said on the עיקר,

5. In one was מסיח דעתו,

6. If one made a ברכה אחרונה on the עיקר.

1. If the טפל is eaten first:

If the טפל is eaten before the עיקר, it still requires a beracha, however, it cannot be covered by the beracha made on the עיקר since that beracha has not yet been recited. The Poskim debate as to what beracha it requires?

  • שיטת בית יוסף – The טפל retains its original beracha.
  • שיטת רמ”א – Although it does indeed require a beracha, but since it is a טפל it loses its own beracha, and a שהכל is recited ((ומקור לדין זה הוא התרומת הדשן סי’ לא שכתב שמי שרוצה לשתות יין וקשה לו לשתות אליבא ריקנא ומביאין לו מאכל שהוא ממתיק השתייה דאע”ג שאין צריך לברך על המאכל מאחר שהוא טפלה ליין, אבל הכא כיון שהטפל נאכל קודם העיקר איך יתכן שיפטרו העיקר!

Therefore, if one eats the טפל before the עיקר, it depends:

  • If the עיקר is a שהכל, then a שהכל is recited on the טפל [in which case the עיקר won’t require a beracha ((מ”ב ס”ק י.)) ],
  • If the עיקר is not a שהכל, the טפל retains its original beracha ((מ”ב סי’ ריב ס”ק י, גר”ז בס’ ברכת הנהנין פ”ג, גר”א בביאורו, וכן שמעתי מהגר”ע אויערבאך שליט”א.

Nevertheless, the משנה ברורה writes that preferably one should not eat the טפל before the עיקר.

Examples

A – If one is eating a cracker with a thin slice of avocado on it (the main food being the cracker and the avocado is just to give it some taste – so only a mezonos is recited, one shouldn’t first eat some of the avocado since it is טפל. However, if one does, e.g., they haven’t brought crackers in yet, he should say a העץ.

B – If one is served a fruit salad with a small biscuit on the top as decoration, the biscuit is considered טפל and does not require a beracha. One should not start eating the biscuit before making a beracha on the fruit salad. If one does, it requires a mezonos.

C – Mushroom sauce served with burekas is טפל and does not require a separate beracha. If one has some of it before eating the bureka – although it shouldn’t really be done – it requires a שהכל.

D – If one is eating pasta and meat mixed together, the pasta is the עיקר (even if it is not the majority of the mixture, since it is mezonos – see page 13). If, however, one eats some of the meat first – although it shouldn’t really be done – a שהכל is required.

E– If one is eating ice-cream/Jelly with pieces of fruit in it, the pieces of fruit are טפל and do not require a separate beracha. If they are being eaten first (which shouldn’t be done), they require a שהכל. [In this case the ice-cream/Jelly will not require a beracha since it is exempted by the beracha on the fruit.]

2. One made a beracha on the עיקר without knowing that the טפל was coming:

If one made a beracha on the main food, and now a side food that he was not expecting was brought in to be eaten together with the main food (or to enhance it etc.,). Although it is טפל to the main food (thus, not requiring its own beracha), the beracha made on the עיקר cannot cover the טפל since he did not know about it when reciting the beracha on the עיקר. Therefore, a beracha is required on the טפל. However, if the טפל is usually served together with the עיקר, it does not require its own beracha even if it was not in front of him when reciting the beracha on the עיקר. Similarly, if the טפל was in front of him at the time of making the beracha on the עיקר, then even if one did not actually have in mind to eat it, it does not require its own beracha. For Example:

  • After one started eating french-fries, some ketchup or mayonnaise was brought in – it does not require a beracha since it is normally eaten together with the main dish.
  • After one starts eating burekas, mushroom sauce is brought in which he knew was going to be brought to him, a beracha does not need to be recited since it was covered by the beracha said on the  עיקר[even if he normally eats it without mushroom sauce].
  • After one started eating crackers, he decided to spread some cream cheese on it – a beracha is now required. Even though normally it would be included in the mezonos said on the cracker, here it cannot, since when making that beracha he did not know he was going to eat it, and it was not in front of him [unless he normally eats it together].

3.   If one added some טפל:

If after starting to eat the mixture, one added moreטפל, it does not require a beracha unless it was added after one finished eating the עיקר.

  • If one is eating latkes with apple sauce, the apple sauce does not require a beracha since it is טפל. However, if after finishing the latkes one decided to take more apple sauce, it requires its own beracha.
  • If after starting a grapefruit some sugar was sprinkled on it, a beracha is not recited over the sugar since it is normally eaten together and is thereby included in the beracha made on the grapefruit.

4.  When no beracha is said on the עיקר:

If one drinks the water to help swallow a pill, a beracha is not recited because it is טפל to the medicine (unless one is also thirsty) ((משום שהמים אין בהם הנאה אלא בזה שהם מרווים את הצימאון ולכן אם אינו צמא כלל אינו נחשב כנהנה מהמים, מ”ב סי’ רד ס”ק מ. However, if one drinks a sweet drink to swallow the pill or to dilute the bitter taste of a medicine it requires a beracha even though it is טפל. ((

This is because since no beracha is said on the עיקר (i.e., the medicine), the pleasant tasting liquid has not been included with any beracha. v   When drinking a pleasant tasting liquid, one should drink some of it before taking the medicine. When eating ice-cream with pieces of biscuit in it during a bread meal; [ice-cream requires a beracha even during a meal ((כיון שלא בא מחמת הסעודה, עי’ שו”ע סי’ קעז ס”א. וכ”כ בשו”ת שבט הלוי ח”א סי’ כה, אג”מ הובא בס’ וזאת הברכה עמ’ 74, הגרש”ז זצ”ל הובא בס’ ותן ברכה עמ’ 87, שו”ת אבן ישראל ח”ט סי’ ב-ו, וכן שמעתי מהגרח”פ שיינברג והגר”ע אויערבאך שליט”א)) ] according to most Poskim the beracha is mezonos (if a substantial amount of mezonos was added). Since a mezonos is not made ((כיון שהם בגדר ספק פת אא”כ הוא פת הבא בכיסנין לכו”ע, עי’ בה”ל סי’ קסח ד”ה טעונים)) , one should remove some ice-cream from the biscuit mixture (or have a piece of chocolate or a candy), make a שהכל on it to exempt the ice-cream within the mixture ((כך שמעתי מהגרפ”א פאלק שליט”א)) .

5. If one was מסיח דעתו in between:

If one changes his location when eating, a new beracha is required on the food eaten in the new location, even if one takes with him the food from the original location ((גמ’ פסחים קא: “שינוי מקום צריך לברך”, שו”ע סי’ קעח)) . This is because one is considered as stopping his meal and starting a new one in the new location. The exception to this rule is if one is eating bread or mezonos – which although one shouldn’t change his location in the first place – if one does, a new beracha is not required ((כיון שהם דברים שצריכים ברכה במקומם, בלא”ה צריך לחזור למקום הראשון, אין השינוי נחשב כהפסק)) . [For more details on this halacha, and to see which locations will require a new beracha – see     וישכם אברהם – הל’ שינוי מקום] As explained earlier, the טפל does indeed require a beracha, but is included in the beracha made on the עיקר. However, this will only work if the טפל is eaten in the same location as the עיקר. If one changed locations in between, the טפל may require its own beracha. This is because חז”ל tell us that when one changes location, it is a type of היסח הדעת and the original beracha is no longer valid for what is being eaten in the new location. Consequently, if one ate the עיקר and טפל and now changed location e.g., he goes outdoors, which requires a new ברכה ראשונה to be said ((משום שינוי מקום, ועל ידי היצעאה ממקומו חשיב כנפסקה סעודתו לגמרי, ומה שאוכל אח”כ כסעודה אחרת דמיא. ולענין מה נחשב שינוי מקום ע”ע ברמ”א ומ”ב שם)) , (provided he didn’t eat bead or mezonos which does not require a new beracha ((שו”ע סי’ קעח ס”ה, מ”ב שם ס”ק מה)) ), a new beracha is required before continuing to eat the טפל (if he wishes to continue eating the עיקר, the beracha on the עיקר will exempt the טפל). For Example:

  • If one ate ice-cream from a plain cone in a store (thus not requiring a beracha on the cone), and went into the street after finishing the ice-cream [שינוי מקום] and started to eat the cone there, a beracha is now required for the cone, even though it was a טפל and could have been eaten in the original location without a beracha.

  • If one was eating kugal and a pickle at a kiddush [in a normal situation, the pickle will not require its own beracha since it is coming to serve the main dish by making it tastier. If one wants the pickle for itself, a separate beracha is required] and leaves to eat outside and is left with only the pickle, a beracha is required on the pickle even though if they would have been eaten in the original location it wouldn’t have required one.

6. If one made a ברכה אחרונה on the עיקר:

If one makes a ברכה אחרונה on the main food and then continues to eat the טפל it will require its own beracha since it is no longer covered by the beracha made on the עיקר ((כיון שכבר נסתלקה ברכת העיקר, ס’ ברכת הבית שיד ס”ז)) .

Q. Must one have in mind to eat the טפל when making the beracha on the עיקר?

A. It depends which type of  עיקר וטפל he is eating:

  • If the foods are mixed together, one does not need to have the טפל in mind when making the beracha on the עיקר. It is automatically included since it is in front of him.
  • If the foods are not mixed, e.g., herring on crackers, ice-cream in a cone, any of the following conditions must be met for the טפל to be automatically included in the beracha made on the עיקר.

a)    The טפל is in front of him when making the beracha on the עיקר,

b)    One has intention to eat the טפל when making the beracha on the עיקר,

c)    The טפל is normally eaten together with the עיקר,

d)    When one washes on bread, the טפל is automatically included.

If none of the above conditions are present, the טפל will require its own beracha. Just as when one makes a ברכה ראשונה on the עיקר it covers the טפל, so too regarding the ברכה אחרונה. The ברכה אחרונה said on the עיקר, covers the טפל. However, if a mixture contains mezonos, even though he will be saying a mezonos before partaking of the food (since that is the עיקר), but he says על המחיה only if he ate a כזית of mezonos בכדי אכילת פרס (within approx, 3-4 minutes) ((מ”ב סי’ רח ס”ק מח, חי”א כלל נ סי’ כא, גר”ז (בסדר ברכת הנהנין) פ”ג ס”ב. . If less than this amount was eaten,על המחיה cannot be recited. For example:

  • If one has a mixture of vegetables (requiring בורא נפשות) and mezonos (requiring על המחיה), since a mezonos is made on the entire mixture [provided it is put in for its own taste, and not foe decoration etc.], the ברכה אחרונה will be על המחיה on condition that he ate the amount of mezonos necessary to make a ברכה אחרונה [a כזית within 3-4 minutes].
  • After eating pasta and meat mixed together (where the meat was טפל, so only a mezonos is said), one will only have to make a על המחיה on the pasta and it will cover the meat since the meat was טפל.
  • After eating schnitzel one makes only a בורא נפשות after since the main food is the chicken, not the mezonos coating.
  • After eating a fruit salad with grapes in it. If the majority of the salad is fruit, the ברכה אחרונה will be בורא נפשות which will cover the grapes also (unless there are more grapes than other fruits).

Q. What if one ate less the required amount to make a ברכה אחרונה on the עיקר, does he make a ברכה אחרונה on the טפל?

If one is not reciting a ברכה אחרונה on the עיקר, one will have to recite one on the טפל provided that he ate the required amount to be able to make a ברכה אחרונה. For example:

  • If one ate a salad with pasta/croutons in it, although he said only mezonos on the salad (provided the mezonos wasn’t put in for decoration, crunch etc,), if he did not eat a כזית on the pasta within approx. 3-4 minutes, he cannot make an על המחיה. Therefore a בורא נפשות will be required provided he ate a כזית of salad within 3-4 minutes.
  • If one ate a cholent on which only a mezonos was said, in many cases aבורא נפשות will be said since he probably didn’t eat a כזית of barley within the mixture within 3-4 minutes.
  • If one ate a chocolate bar that had a mezonos in it (where he only made a mezonos)a בורא נפשות will probably have to be recited (if there was a lot of chocolate) since there is normally not enough mezonos to say a על המחיה.
  • After eating a cheese cake with a thick layer of mezonos – so mezonos was made on the cake – if he didn’t eat too much of the base, a בורא נפשות should be made ((כיון שמצטרף הדגן עם הגבינה לברכת בורא נפשות, כ”ה בשו”ת מנחת שלמה סי’ צא ס”ק ד.)) .
  • When eating a fruit salad with a small amount of grapes, even though one eats a כזית of the grapes, “על הפירות” is not required on the grapes since they are covered by the בורא נפשות said on the other fruits that were the majority [in a salad that the grapes are the majority fruit, an על הפירות is required on the entire salad] ((ס’ מגילת ספר סי’ לה אות יב, שכיון שמברך בורא נפשות על שאר מינים שהם הרוב נפטרו גם המינים של שבעת המינים מברכה מעין ג’, ואף להסוברים דברכת מעין ג’ הוי דארייתא היינו רק כשאכל מהפירות שיעור שביעה וזה לא מצוי כ”כ וספק ברכת להקל, ע”ש עוד.)) .
