Buying Sefer with Maaser Money

We have a sponsor that backed the cost of publishing a new sefer. If the sefer is bought by us, all money goes to tzedaka, and if by the publisher, a percentage has to go to them. Can people use tzedaka money to buy it?

Answer:

If I understand correctly, your buying of the Sefer will cause a certain amount of money to go to tzedakah. It is not your money that is going to tzedakah, but rather your buying the Sefer will save money for tzedakah, since the money that would otherwise be paid to a publisher will be saved.

If this is the correct understanding, you would not be able to take this money from maaser, since your money is not going to tzedakah.

However, if a part of your money itself is going to tzedakah, then it will be permitted to use maaser money, based on some of the sources cited here.

Best wishes.
