Tallis Before Tefillin

I read that ancient Minhag before Shulchan-Aruch era was to put on Tefillin first then Tallit-Gadol. Is it true?

Answer:

I am not aware of this custom. The Shulchan Aruch (25) writes that the Tallis is worn before the Tefillin, and this is based on the principle of Maalin BaKodesh – the kedushah of Tefillin is greater than that of the Tallis.

It stands to reason that this was also the prevalent custom, since otherwise this will have found mention in the commentaries around the Shulchan Aruch and by other authorities of the time.

Best wishes.

  1. The Piskei Teshuvot in Siman 25 on Amud 213 in a footnote (37) references a Bais Yosef in the name of the Spanish Kabbalists and a Radva”z, Chelek 6, Siman 2 that there was such an inyan to put on Tzitzis (Arba Kanfot) first, followed by Tefillin and then finally to wrap oneself in a Tallis Gadol. It is possible that the Shulchan Aruch HaZohar also lists this Minhag, but it is not practiced today.
