Modim out Loud

In the repetition of the amida, what discretion if any should the chazzan have in saying the first part of the modim prayer, either as normal or quietly so that it is not heard? That is, should the congregation decide which way it should be done, or should it be left up to the chazzan?
Thank you.

Answer:

The chazzan should say Modim out loud, so that he can be heard by the congregation. This is part of the Shemoneh Esrei just as all others, and it should therefore be said out loud.

See Mishnah Berurah 124:41.

Best wishes.
