Sending Boy to Yeshiva in South of Israel

A former talmid of mine who is raising his family in New Jersey, is hesitating sending his 18 year old son to learn in an excellent Yeshiva located near Ashdod in the South. I am convinced that a year at that Yeshiva would make a tremendous impact in Torah & Yirah on the young man, on his family, and on the wife this young man will ultimately chose to marry and the family he will raise. Yet I hesitate to take responsibility to influence the father to send his son; should I be imposing my Bitachon that no harm will come to the young man upon the worried father? (Please note that a four year old boy was killed by Hamas rockets in that area just two days ago).

Answer:

The yeshivot in the south have always taken great care to protect their Talmidim from any danger, and I am sure that this will continue for the future. They do not “rely on miracles” and don’t take the attitute that Torah will protect them, but rather take all required precautions, including relocating where necessary.

The hope is that the current ceasefire will be lasting.

Either way, you are of course correct that a a year in yeshiva can make a huge and central impact on a person’s life, and I don’t think you need to hesitate at all in trying to have the boy sent to yeshiva in Israel. In terms of statistics Israel, including the south, is not really more dangerous than being anywhere else in the world, so that there is no need to “impose your Bitachon” in this case.

Best wishes and good luck.
