Minimum Bread for Shabbat Meal

I am training for a fitness competition, and I am on a strict diet, which prohibits carbohydrates at night. Is it permissible to eat less than a k’zais of challah on Shabbat night while training for the competition? What is the minimum?

Answer:

This will be something of a problem. For purposes of the meal one has to eat a Kezayis, and for purposes of the Netillas Yadayim one needs to eat a Kebeitzah.

Therefore, you should eat at the very least a kezayis, which is really not much (half a regular slice of bread). If this is all the bread you are eating, do Netilas Yadayim without a berachah.

Best wishes.

  1. Ideally, one should eat slightly more than an egg’s volume of bread at all 3 Shabbos meals. B’dieved, it will be enough to eat an olive’s volume at the first two meals, and to eat fruits for the third meal.
