Non-Jewish Agency

Good day.

I am reading a halachic text, but I don’t know all the terms. I wonder if you can help me with this one:

Slichot akum l’chumrah /
שליחות עכו”ם לחומרא

What does it mean, and would you happen to know where I can read more about this principle in various halachic texts in English? Thank you!

Thanks!

Tovah

Answer:

This means that although when a Jew sends a non-Jew as an agent for doing something related to Jewish law, the agency is not valid, we still consider the agency as being valid for purposes of stringency. Meaning, where a stringency can result from seeing the agency as valid, we will do so, even though it is generally considered invalid.

Best wishes.
