Ethical Dilemma

In order for Johnny to get a private music class my teacher has to cancel three other group classes. At last minute the ski finals get rescheduled and if Johnny is not there his team will be disqualified. What is the right thing to do? (with sightings please)

Answer:

Attend the ski finals, but compensate the teacher for his financial loss.

According to Torah law Johnny will be liable for the financial loss caused by this last-minute cancellation (see Choshen Mishpat 11 and commentaries). At the same time, Johnny has a moral responsibility to his team. The right course of action will therefore be to attend the finals, but to compensate the teacher.

Best wishes.
