Davening Shacharis after Mussaf

If someone forgot to say on Rosh Chodesh Yaleh V’Yavo during the week in Shachris and remembered only after davening musaf what should be done now?

Answer:

Shacharis must be davened after Mussaf. Although lechatchilah Mussaf is davened after Shacharis, bedieved one has to daven even after Mussaf (Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 19:11; see also Mishnah Berurah 422, citing from the Rashba).

According to the Ben Ish Chai (Year 2, Vayikra 13), one cannot daven Shacharis after Mussaf, and some Sephardi poskim rule accordingly.

The Shulchan Aruch Ha-Rav (126:3) likewise rules (based on the Rama of Fano) that Shacharis cannot be davened after Mussaf, and those who follow his customs would not daven again, but rather daven Mincha twice.

Best wishes.

  1. If Rosh Chodesh was already “mentioned” by davening Musaf so why to daven now over again Shachris?

    1. According to the opinion that obligates it, the reasoning is that having omitted Rosh Chodesh, the obligation to daven Shacharit remains, and one must therefore daven again.
