Collecting Clothing on Shabbos

Someone took an item of clothing to a (Jewish) seamstress before Shabbos (that works in her home). On Shabbos itself she now needed the clothing and wasn’t able to get it before Shabbos. May she go to the home of the seamstress pick it up on Shabbos? Is there any problem of “maris ayin” that we find in OC Siman 252 Sif 4 (Rema)?

Answer:

The prohibition of mairs ayin mentioned by the Shulchan Aruch applies even to a Jewish tailor (as noted by the Mishnah Berurah), and this will seemingly apply here. Although the seamstress works from home, if the place is known as as belonging to a seamstress, the problem will remain.

Even if it was argued that the problem of maris ayin will not apply to somebody working from home, the poskim mention that there is also a possible problem of uvdin de-chol (as noted by the Bach; the Magen Avraham and the Mishnah Berurah add this as a possibility), and this is another reason why the item of clothing should not be collected on Shabbos.

Best wishes.
