Working and Cleaning — Mitzvos?

Is it a mitzvah for a man to go to work or is it just something he has to do? and likewise for a woman, is cleaning a mitzvah or just something that she is supposed to do?

Answer:

There is a mitzvah of going to work, in that a person should be self-sufficient. The Gemara writes that there is a great virtue of “enjoying the fruit of one’s own labor,” and the Mishnah writes that Torah study is “good with derech eretz (work).”

At the same time, one should strive to minimize one’s working time, and maximize the time one spends learning Torah.

For women and men alike, there is a “mitzvah” of living in a clean home, of giving proper respect to the Divine Image in which we are created, and of allowing oneself to function in a conducive environment.
