Sources: According to a number of authorities, if one postpones a pidyon haben, one transgresses a positive mitzvah for each day of postponement. See Orchos Chaim (Maharsham, no. 568) and Levush (551:17). Although Minchas Chinuch (392) writes that one does not trasgress a mitzvah, he concedes that that the general principle of not delaying mitzvos applies, which is also sufficient reason to avoid delaying the mitzvah for a later time.
